Inspiration from across the world for retail enthusiasts, e-commerce professionals, marketing lovers and technology fans. Welcome back! I summarized some great links again, I stumbled upon this week.
🤔Feature explanation: How Duolingo is so successful in getting your attention
The Wall Street Journal had an extensive article on Duolingo’s features and hooks. Well written and useful article for everyone in marketing or product management, I think.
The ability to get people hooked and keep them engaged is one of the holy grails in business. Few companies do it better than Duolingo, the world’s most popular app for learning another language, which takes advantage of two concepts that translate to lots of other industries: streaks and notifications.
There are many companies that might not be eager to remind people of their usage habits. You’ve watched Netflix for 162 nights in a row. Last chance to extend your streak! Duolingo is the opposite. One of the company’s most reliable methods of bringing users back to the app is simply telling people how much time they have already invested.
Other companies bombard you with messages that begin to feel like spam, and they can get so annoying that you turn off notifications entirely. But if it seems like every time Duolingo sends you a notification, it’s tailored specifically for you and sent at precisely the moment when you’re most likely to click, well, that’s because it is.

🔍Strategy: Google is making third-party reviews obsolete?
More and more Google is summarizing all kinds of data from various sources, including reviews. In some countries, the “Store Quality Program” is already live.
It’s so easy to see and to understand that it might not be needed to check f.e. Trustpilot reviews anymore. When that happens, it might have a negative impact, because the overall pool of reviews will get less comprehensive and that might affect the reliability of the Google summary.
I do think, this quality program, can be helpful for some (sellers and consumers), but it can give a barrier to new trustworthy sellers.
I do hope it will also be used to identify the many “bait and switch” shops that are active.

😖Captcha: how does it work and what does it mean?
This is a nice, entertaining video on those annoying “Captcha’s” to understand how they work and how to shortcut them. Hint (move your mouse a few times before clicking the box).
By the way, I think, Cloudflare’s captcha is much better than Google’s. More privacy, less intrusive, better user experience. So if you set up one, use Cloudflare and help make the web better.

🛎️The Ultimate List of Product Metrics
posted “The ultimate list of product Metrics”. I think a very complete list. Worth a save it covers:Acquisition: How do users find you?
Activation: How do they experience value?
Retention: Do they stay with you?
Revenue: How do you make money?
Referrals: Do they tell others about your product?
Engagement: How do they interact with your product?

🎧Podscan FM: Google alerts for podcasts
There are many tools on the market, to monitor your brand mentions in the online world. But I have not seen a tool that scans podcasts. Great idea and in an era where AI might generate fewer clicks, building a brand in other ways may only increase in importance. I listen a lot to podcasts, there is so much to learn from them.
This service is also very valuable for finding podcasts on topics you want to learn about.
You can test this tool for free for 7 days, as I am doing now. So far it works great!

🇹🇭 Funny brandnames: Tinglish
Recently,. in Thailand, I stumbled upon these restaurant names. It’s often in Asia also in other countries, especially in Shopping malls you find these funny Chinglish or Tinglish brand names. It always makes me smile and sometimes even makes me buy.
🦾Vectoreshift.ai useful for agency’s, freelancers and SME’s
I followed a short course on the 'Vectorshift.ai' platform, and it was well worth the money, providing me with many valuable insights. Vectorshift is a platform that I think is especially useful for freelancers, agencies, and SMEs. It helps use the power of LLMs (Large Language Models), with many to choose from or even upload, in a custom setting like a chat environment.
An important part of Vectorshift's power comes from vector databases. Think of vector databases like super smart libraries that store and find information really quickly. This makes Vectorshift super fast and able to handle lots of information these vector databases store information in a way that LLMs, like ChatGPT of Gemini, can access it quickly and easily.
We are moving, more and more, to low code or no code, and this platform uses low code “flows” to achieve a goal. It is very intuitive. Think of use cases like:
✅ Creating AI personas for your clients or company
✅ Developing chatbots using platforms such as OpenAI
✅ Building AI-powered sales support agents
✅ Designing legal/compliance chatbots
✅ Integrating your AI agent into Slack, HubSpot, Shopify, etc.

🇨🇭 Grüezi: Switzerland makes things cheaper
Sometimes we forget there are also countries who do things right and help their citizens. Switzerland is one of those they remove import duties on products, resulting in lower costs and higher economic growth.
Switzerland has scrapped import duties on industrial products, the government said on Tuesday. The move aims to lower costs for consumers and manufacturers.
These trade facilitation measures seek to reduce prices for the consumer, thus contributing to the fight against inflation, and to increase the productivity and competitiveness of Swiss companies. The move also creates attractive opportunities for foreign exporters seeking to supply the Swiss market.
🏖️ChatGPT: My assistant on holiday
I am using ChatGPT now on holiday a lot. And while the voice version, doesn’t work so smoothly (tried it at an exhibition to translate the speaker f.e.), I am very satisfied by using the text version to ask for holiday advice, where to go, etc. Have to say: it is not always correct, maybe 7 out of 10 times it is accurate.
Things that went wrong for example with directions is, that it indicated the venue would be near the airport, now that’s true, but Bangkok has 2 large airports and it indicated the wrong one to me. Also, it gave a few times wrong opening times.
It’s nice that you can ask questions on buildings or anything you see, it’s like a guide that knows a really a lot. I also use sometimes “perplexity” I think it works very good as well.
ChatGPT does help very efficiently with translating menus and to make an itinerary for the day. It’s only a matter of time before these assistants are completely integrated into the holiday experience and I think they are very valuable for hotels as well.
Now (up to my frustration) it is often not possible to simply “chat” with a reception. Something very basic that can enhance the guest experience, especially with language barriers. I think a well-trained LLM for a hotel can solve many questions or, when processes are set up correctly, arrange things for guests. Well I can write for hours on that, won’t do it now, don’t worry 😂.
